Oh my god this song just makes me cry every single time… especially when you can hear those soldiers singing… ugh.
Every time I listen to this song I feel like I’m actually watching the scene where Robbie is walking through Dunkirk, wounded and very ill, waiting to be evacuated. It’s just so beautiful. It gives me chills.
This scene from Atonement is extremely moving as no words are actually spoken, or very few. The strings in the background take the viewer and audience along with James McAvoy and his band of misfits along a ruined beach, where rack and ruin reign supreme. The stirring inclusion of a band of soldiers singing in chorus really touched me, and Dario Marianelli really based the strings around the characters of a unionized central male vocal. The whole scene combined invokes thought and wants for peace and communion, where in some parts of the beach there is some. But mostly decay and anarchy reign supreme, soldiers waiting to go home to what they think will be normal lives will in fact be ruined forever by what they have seen. I think this scene is one of the most poignant in the movie because of its capacity to draw upon the savage nature of war without the trench warfare, just what a group of men put together can, or should be, can’t do.
